McDonald’s workers are to receive a pay rise after staff at two restaurants walked out in the first strikes in the fast-food chain’s UK history.
Staff walked out at branches in Cambridge and Crayford, London, for 24-hours in September 2016 demanding secure working patterns and wage increases.
An employee yesterday shared a notice put up at a London branch detailing pay increases for all staff positions with The Mirror.
The biggest pay rise in 10 years for McDonald’s employees working in company-owned restaurants will be implemented on 22 January.
A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “Reward and recognition for our people and their contribution is a key priority, and to ensure we can attract and retain the best people, we regularly review pay and benefits.
“While our franchisees set their own pay rates, we have recommended an increase across all age bands for our hourly employees to be implemented from 22 January.
“From kitchen to counter to front of house, our success would not be possible without the hard work of our people, so we will keep working hard to do right by them.”
McDonald’s employs about 85,000 staff in the UK.
The Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union said: “This pay rise is a step in the right direction for all of McDonalds workers but by no means is it the end of the campaign if just 30 workers can lift wages above anything McDonalds have raised in recent history or being forced to through legislation then imagine what we can do when thousands organise across McDonalds and what we will achieve.”
The union said it would continue to campaign for “a real contract of employment” and a “minimum wage for all of at least £10” for McDonald’s employees.
